Who this article is for: CleverCards Cardholders who want to add money to their card, move money off it, or withdraw cash.
Can I top up or reload my card?
No. CleverCards are prepaid cards, so once your card has been issued the balance cannot be topped up or recharged.
Prepaid means the card is loaded with a set amount when it is issued. When that balance is spent, the card cannot be refilled.
Can I transfer money to my bank account?
No. It is not possible to transfer funds from your CleverCard to a bank account. The funds fall under the Small Benefits Tax Exemption scheme, which means they can only be used to buy goods or services.
Converting these funds into cash could create a tax liability for both you and your employer. That is the reason for the restriction, rather than a limitation of the card itself.
Can I send money to Revolut, PayPal or a similar app?
No. Your CleverCard cannot be used for:
- Cash withdrawals at an ATM
- Money transfers, for example to Revolut, PayPal or Wise
- Quasi-cash purchases, such as cryptocurrency or money orders
Quasi-cash means anything that works like buying cash rather than buying goods or services.
These restrictions are set out in the Terms and Conditions for your card, which you can find in the CleverCards App.
Can I merge two CleverCards into one?
Not at the moment. Following our recent migration to Stripe, card merging is unavailable. We do not currently have a confirmed date for when, or whether, this will return.
