When you make a purchase, a temporary hold may be placed on your card for the transaction amount. This hold typically lasts for a few days until the merchant processes the transaction. Usually the merchant has 7 days to process the transaction, however some merchant types like hotels or taxis have an authorisation period of 30 days. If the merchant does not complete the transaction within this period, the hold may be released, and the funds become available again.
If a transaction is disputed or a refund is requested, the resolution process can take longer. The exact time frame depends on the merchant’s policies and the investigation process by the card issuer.
Once the payment authorisation has expired and the funds are no longer on hold, the balance should return to your account.
