Who this article is for: CleverCards Cardholders using the CleverCards App on your own phone.
Do I need a mobile phone?
Your CleverCard is a digital card, so you need a smartphone to use it. You will use the CleverCards App to activate your card, view your card details, and make purchases.
CleverCards is digital only, so there is no physical card. If you are not able to use a digital card, contact the person or organisation that issued your card, usually your employer, and ask them about alternatives.
Quick check: device requirements
| Device type | Minimum operating system | Where to check on your phone |
|---|---|---|
| Android | Android 5.1 or later | Settings > About Phone (or System) > Android Version |
| iPhone | iOS 13.0 or later | Settings > General > About > Software Version |
| Huawei | Not supported on newer models | See the Huawei section below |
Your operating system, often shortened to OS, is the software your phone runs on. The version number tells you how up to date it is.
Android
The CleverCards App supports Android 5.1 or later. Some phones label this as API level 22.
To check your version:
- Open Settings
- Look for About Phone or System, as the wording varies by device
- Check Android Version or Android OS
To pay in a shop using Google Pay, NFC needs to be switched on.
NFC stands for Near Field Communication. It is the short-range wireless feature that lets you tap your phone to pay. Almost all modern Android phones have it, and it is usually switched on already.
Some Huawei phones run Android but cannot install the CleverCards App. See the Huawei section further below.
iPhone
The CleverCards App supports iOS 13.0 or later.
To check your version:
- Open Settings
- Scroll down and tap General
- Select About
- Check Software Version
To pay in a shop using Apple Pay, NFC needs to be switched on. This is standard on all supported iPhone models.
Huawei devices
The CleverCards App is only available from the Google Play Store for Android and the Apple App Store for iPhone. Newer Huawei devices cannot access the Google Play Store, so the CleverCards App cannot be downloaded on them. This is outside CleverCards' control.
If this applies to you, you will need a phone that can use one of the two app stores above.
Still stuck?
If your device meets the requirements above and the CleverCards App still is not working, contact CleverCards Cardholder Support at support@clevercards.com and tell us your device model and operating system version.
