Who this article is for: CleverCards Cardholders who can see a pending transaction in the CleverCards App.
What does pending mean?
A pending transaction is a card payment that has been approved but has not yet been completed by the retailer.
When you pay, the retailer asks us to set aside the amount. We approve the payment and place a hold on the money. It has not left your card yet, but you cannot spend it while it is held. This is called an authorisation hold.
The transaction stays marked as pending in your CleverCards app until the retailer collects the money.
How long does a hold last?
The time it takes for a retailer to collect the money, or for a hold to be released, can vary depending on the type of purchase. The timeframes below are typical, but they are not guaranteed.
| Type of purchase | Typical timeframe |
|---|---|
| Most purchases | Up to 7 days |
| Hotels, taxis and similar | Up to 30 days |
If the retailer collects the money within that timeframe, the transaction changes to Approved in the App.
If they do not, the authorisation hold expires and the held amount becomes available on your card again. This is not a refund, as the money was only held and had not been collected by the retailer.
Can you reverse a pending transaction?
No. Once a transaction has been authorised, we cannot stop or reverse it, because the funds are already committed to the retailer.
A pending transaction will only reverse if the retailer declines it, or if they do not collect the money within the time window above.
If you do not recognise a pending transaction, or you want to dispute it, you can only do that once it has fully settled.
Where do I check the status of a transaction?
You can see the status of every transaction in the CleverCards App. See Viewing your cards, balance and transactions in the app
